An ongoing conversation my friend Michael Parisi & I have is around the question: What is the mind of Christ?

Or what is the mind of God?

I’ve been exclusively reading St. John of the Cross and finding great value in his ancient writings.

What’s becoming increasingly clear to me is that the overwhelming majority of our socially / culturally conditioned thoughts are a complete waste of time.

They do not lead us into a harmonious dance of trust with the mind of our Creator.

They are a waste of energy at best, a destructive pattern toward ourselves and others at worst.

The more one’s mind steps into communion with God, the more this excessive thinking—

*worry

*fear

*anxiety

*doubts

*addictions

*resentments

*jealousy

*revenge

*vanity

*hedonistic pursuits

starts to fade away as strength, confidence, and faith grow into the simple and repeated act of fully surrendering to God’s will, moment by moment.

This does not actually require more knowing. It requires an absolute unknowing. A process of subtraction.

With the continued emptying of the mind and the heart, we become much more open and available for God’s presence to fill us and illuminate us.

My sense is that, as we become increasingly purified on this path, the amount of overall content bouncing around in our head can be reduced by probably 75% to 80%.

Figures like Eckhart Tolle, Thich Nhat Hanh, & others who teach the value of stilling the mind are correct.

Yet, here’s the important thing: You can never still the mind by trying to do it for your own egoic benefit & gratification. It just creates more internal noise.

It happens as a byproduct of fully giving your life to God (the loving presence at the heart of all creation).

I believe this is what it means when Christ teaches us to be ‘poor in spirit.’

After an extended period of disorientation & now reorientation, I have found a most rooted and beautiful home for myself in the rich tradition of contemplative Christianity.

Particularly the Catholic / Orthodox tradition with its long list of great saints and absolute powerhouse mystics to draw pristine wisdom from.

The interesting thing is very few of the clients I work with have been, or are, Christian.

My clients have always spanned every category:  ‘spiritual, but not religious,’ Yogis, New Age, Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Pagan, Atheist.

No one has ever been asked to change who they are.

Everyone is, however, asked to consider the same question.

What are you thinking about each day?

If you look closely, the odds are most of what you’re thinking about is an unhealthy waste of time & energy.

The good news is, through clear intention, dedicated, committed practice, self-inquiry, discipline, grit, and grace, that can and will change.

I can attest to that from my own experience and the lives of those I’ve worked with.

I love getting deep under the hood of someone’s mind over an extended period of time, working to uncover the patterns that are no longer serving them, and watching breakthroughs manifest in their life in doing so.

It feels like the work God has truly called me to, and I’m so deeply grateful for that.

It’s become increasingly clear to me what I’m not called to do is spend lots of time on social media.

Why do I say that?

The business model of social media platforms is to maximize profit by maximizing your time and engagement—because your attention is what’s sold to advertisers and used for data-driven targeting.

Simply put: the goal of social media is to make you addicted to social media, by any means necessary.

The algorithm has discovered these are the primary emotional levers that get people hooked on social media:

Rage

Fear

Insecurity

Anger

Anxiety

Worry

Jealousy (FOMO)

Lust

I’ve watched social media addiction make so many people I know overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, lost in information silos, mentally inflexible, turn against their own family and friends for ideological/political reasons, and increasingly detached from reality.

As the saying goes, these people need to “touch grass.”

But here’s the thing to understand.

If the goal of social media is to make you addicted to social media, then who is the enemy of social media companies?

Anything and anyone who takes your time and attention away from social media.

The enemy of social media companies is your life.

Your spouse (or potential spouse)

Your children

Your friends

Your gym

Your church (or potential church)

Your state park

Your books

Your inner silence

Your contemplation/prayer time

The greatest enemy of social media companies is you living a happy and healthy life.

In an age of such mass and intentional distraction, I help people stay focused on the key focal points that foster a truly meaningful life.

As St. Irenaeus once said: The glory of God is a man fully alive.

We are living through a time of major transition and uncertainty. For many people it can feel confusing, at times even overwhelming.

About Me

We’re in Pennsylvania, and the whole family has gathered to celebrate my father’s 80th birthday.

My father has lived in the same city his whole life.

He’s been married to the same woman his whole life.

He worked at the same job for close to thirty years until he was laid off.

He’s had the same friends and gone to the same church every Sunday for decades.

He’s walked with the same friends at the same mall, at the same time, six days a week, for years.

One time, my family played a game. We went around the circle, and everyone had a chance to answer the following question:

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

Everyone took turns harnessing the far reaches of their imagination to mention all kinds of exotic, luxurious, spectacular locations.

The question finally came around to my father, who said: “Berks County, Pennsylvania. Best place in the world.” The place he was born and lived his whole life.

Every time I ask my dad if he’s happy, including today, he immediately says yes.

When I work with clients, I work both on the external level and on the internal level.

Some clients need to make major external changes. End relationships. Change jobs or start a new business. Move to a new place they’ve always dreamed of living. Make big lifestyle changes. Break addictive habits.

And sometimes all that’s required is a change of perspective—finding the gratitude and appreciation for what one already has and what has been there all along.

The simple beauty of being alive is always here and now if we’re present enough to notice.

The way the big glow of the sun gently rises over the trees, the flowers smile with the new dawn, and the birds gently sing in the morning twilight.

Over the past couple of months, I’ve spent little to no time on social media, and I expect that trend to continue for the rest of the year, and probably longer.

Most of my quality time over the past couple of months has gone to the key areas that bring the greatest fulfillment to my distinct calling in this world, in this new chapter of my life:

• Being the best husband I can be.

• Being the best father I can be. (I’m loving seeing this world again for the first time through the eyes of my now almost two-year-old.)

• Being dedicated to supporting my clients and their continued positive transformation in the key areas of their lives.

• Being devoted to deepening my communion with God.

I’m aware there are all kinds of crazy, scary, anxiety-provoking things happening on many fronts in the news right now. My prayers go out to all those who are being affected.

And I also assure you, there’s a quiet, utterly still, and beautiful place of profound peace and freedom deep down inside each and every one of us, where there’s no news at all.

Today I quickly ran into a pharmacy in Pooler, Georgia, to run an errand.

I was awestruck by the cashier. A nondescript, middle-aged, dark-haired  woman with glasses. There was nothing extraordinary about her in physical appearance.

However, there was something extraordinary about her soul.

What was amazing was the kindness, care, presence, and all-around cheerfulness with which she dealt with each person in line, including me.

Her intention was clearly to brighten each person’s day who came to her counter.

It was like watching a priest, a shaman, a great alchemist, a supreme healer at work, in the most unlikely of places!

I could feel her silently praying over each person as a conduit for God’s love, while on the surface level she asked someone how they were doing, chatted about the weather, complimented them on their outfit, wished them a great day.

I left that cash register physically transformed. Lighter. Brighter. Unburdened by anything that stands in opposition to the Truth. She transmitted the Big Glow.

A reminder you don’t need to be a prime minister, a CEO, or a movie star to make a positive difference in the world.

You can be a cashier at a pharmacy in Pooler, Georgia.

You can do it right wherever  you are. No matter how insignificant, or unimportant it may seem.

In fact, there’s nowhere else to do it.

This is the time. Right here and now.

While they differ on the specifics, all religions agree on the following: The state of your soul and your consciousness at the time of your death is a determining factor on where you go next.

When we think of the word 'death' we, of course, think of our transition from physical death to the afterlife.

However, there are many big deaths and rebirths throughout the course of our  human life as well, where the state of our consciousness at the time of transition is fundamental to what comes next.

Instead of drinking and drugging yourself unconscious amidst terrible music, what if New Year's was actually considered to be a sacred and holy time of transition?

A time to turn off the phone and the TV. A time to tune into your breath. A time to pray and meditate. A time commune with God's creation, as you engage in deep conversation,  

around the fireplace, with fellow souls on the path.

What if it was a time to prepare to sanctify your soul for the New Year? A time to get quiet and listen for the intentions that are being called forth over the next 12 months.

A time to ask to be held accountable to stepping into the highest and best version of yourself this coming year.

We would verbalize our New Year's intentions to each other on the shore of the lake underneath the spacious stillness of a thousand stars.

Then,  just before midnight, would bring in the New Years in Silence.

We would have all kinds of powerful spiritual experiences  and deep insights during that time. We would see shooting stars, comets.. even UFOs one year!

It felt like relaxing into a deeper dimension of reality—one in which the span of what’s possible widened considerably, allowing the coming year to unfold from the seeds planted at that depth.

This ritual was so much more of a powerful way to bring in the New Years than the mindless drinking and drugging so much of the rest world was doing,  that I felt deeply called to share it with others.

In 2017 for the first time I did, and that was the first ever Big Glow New Year's Retreat.

I've scheduled a New Year's Retreat every year ever since, bringing in New Year's with hundreds of people over that time.

There will come a time in the next one to two generations, due to AI advancement, where everything in the online world will become so fake yet indistinguishable from reality that no one will be able to tell the difference anymore.

Everything online will eventually be presumed to be fiction and consumed as fiction.

The only possible way anymore to be sure that one is having an authentic and genuine, unmediated, unedited experience with another will be offline, face-to-face interactions.

Humanity will break into three different directions.

1) A portion of the population will lose themselves in complete, 24/7 addiction to the fictional online world, losing touch with reality altogether (think The Matrix).

These people will literally need to be given IVs to stay alive, as they mindlessly stare at their screens.

They will no longer have any compulsion to care for their own physical bodies, as their energy is mined to feed the Machine.

2) A second portion of the population will use the online world as an occasional form of indulgence in fantasy and imagination, while still giving their primary attention to genuine human interactions—similar to the way people currently may watch a few movies a week or a TV series for fictional entertainment.

3) The third portion of the population will be creating communities which consciously and intentionally eliminate the internet, television, and smartphones altogether, in favor of deeper communion with each other, Nature, and God.

In these communities, the screen will be eschewed for face-to-face conversations, making music together, cooking and eating meals together, praying and meditating together, dancing together, building aesthetically beautiful architecture and gardens together.

Sharing sacred time in places of immense natural beauty and inspiration will be the focus. (Think Amish but cooler & having lots more fun 🤩)

Amidst TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, the porn and the OnlyFans, the AI invasion, the video games, online shopping, online gambling, the endless TV shows, movies, shorts, reels, and podcasts, the so-called “top stories” on the News with their clickbait headlines.

For the first time in human history, it’s all instantaneously and continuously available in the little box you carry in your pocket all day.

Then there are all the potential distractions beyond your phone: the endless varieties of drugs (legal and illegal, “plant-based” and synthetic). Vapes and patches, tablets and capsules, drinks and pills. Things to eat, inject, snort, smoke, or drink.

The cheap “fast food” on every corner, sugar-highs and “energy drinks,” the get-rich-quick scams, the endless gossip and tabloids, the bars, the clubs, the new hair color, the latest trends, the new tattoo.

In today’s environment, I can say with absolute certainty:

The most important ninja-level, Jedi skill today is the ability to maintain elite focus.

In working with my men’s mastermind group, my private clients, as well as the couples I coach, one thing is absolutely consistent:

Sustained focus is the number one predictor of success in any area of life: work or business, relationship, marriage, family, parenting, spiritual practice.

Elite focus is the new superpower.

It all comes down to this:

1. You must cultivate a very clear, inspired, long-term vision for your life.

You must know exactly where you want to go.

This is the first thing I support people with.

2. You must maintain focus amidst temptations, superficial distractions, and the countervailing noise.

This is the second thing I support people with.

Allowing any of the thousands of distractions to creep in leads to failure.

It creates the feeling that you’re never going to get there — because as long as you keep getting distracted, you most certainly won’t.

If that’s you, then it’s going to require a higher level of sustained focus to manifest your dreams than you’ve been exhibiting.

More sustained focus = more success.

The most successful people in the world have a support team assisting them in focusing their attention — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually — over a long-term basis to engrain the new patterns.

Some people like the parties, the bright lights, the giant festivals. More and more in my life, I like the desolate aloneness of the Quiet.

The deep Quiet has infinite space inside. It's pregnant with possibility. 

Within it, life can move in any direction. It's not yet bound by time or form. It's not yet bound by the story of "i".

Out of The Quiet, universes appear and disappear. 

It's peaceful in the Quiet. Like re-turning to one's eternal Home.

Someone asked: "How do I quiet my mind?"

A better question is: "How do I notice The Quiet that is already here?"

The Quiet that's present when you're watching the sunrise over the oak tree. 

When you're fighting with your spouse.

When you're petting your dog on a Sunday morning.

When your friend unexpectedly dies.

When you're looking into the loving eyes of a baby

When your feeling tired and hungry

When you're eating an apple on a Summer afternoon

When the money is dwindling in your bank account

When the snow is gently falling on the open prairie

How do I notice The Quiet that is ever-present?

The answer is to listen for it. 

Amidst the surface-layer distractions and the passing noise, begin to sincerely listen for it. 

It's here.

The sun is rising over the tree line and through the clouds from our bedroom window. The world is very silent and still right now. Yet it will get louder as the day goes on.

News of wars and suffering around the world.

The culture wars will commence on social media.

New debit card and utility bills will come in.

The needs and problems of family and business will arise.

The daily commercials will once again claim I’m deficient unless I immediately purchase their product.

How does one move through the noise and chatter of the day while maintaining the interior silence and stillness of that beautiful morning sunrise?

How can we be fully present and embodied in the comings and goings of this world yet grounded in the silent place inside, where nothing ever happened?

How do we learn to rest in the timeless Truth that sets us eternally free? The peace that passeth all understanding. The acausal joy. The innocence consciousness. The simplicity of BEing. 

Beyond all that temporarily appears and disappears, how do we discover the timeless, loving presence of God that is unconditionally and eternally free?

Amidst the deep stillness of the infinite morning sky, a hawk suddenly appears. He flies completely across the screen of my awareness until he

slowly fades back into the stillness of the infinite sky once again.
